Chile's first urban market
The Mercado Urbano Tobalaba (MUT) is more than just a market – it is a vibrant meeting place where modern architecture, a lively atmosphere and culinary diversity come together. Whether strolling between the stalls, people-watching or playing with light and shadow – there are countless moments here that are worth capturing. Why is MUT particularly exciting for photographers? A look at the unique mix of design, dynamics and details provides the answer.”
The idea behind the MUT was to create a mixed-use area that combines office space, retail, restaurants and public spaces. The project comprises three mid-rise office towers arranged around an open plaza, with a profile that reflects the nearby Andes mountain range. Double-storey retail spaces line the streets, while a special shopping experience in the form of a ‘mountain village’ has been created between the towers on an upper level.
Modern architecture meets green spaces
A central element of the MUT is the urban market in the basement, where visitors can buy fresh produce such as fruit, vegetables and meat as well as other goods such as beer, wine and cheese.
In addition, the MUT offers 21,000 m² of open and green spaces, including elevated plazas, similar to the famous High Line Park in New York. These public areas are accessible free of charge and encourage community interaction.
The project places great emphasis on sustainability and aims to improve the quality of life of current and future generations. One example of this is the “BiciHub” with 2,000 bicycle parking spaces, showers and specialized workshops, which promotes the use of environmentally friendly means of transport.
The Mercado Urbano Tobalaba (MUT) is located at the intersection of Avenidas Tobalaba, Apoquindo and Nueva Providencia, a highly frequented area with over 3.5 million pedestrians per month.
