A unique open-air art project

The San Miguel open-air museum in Chile is a unique open-air art project located in the municipality of the same name south of Santiago. On the exterior walls of houses, social institutions and public spaces, you will find over 60 impressive murals and mosaics that reflect the urban and social life of the area.

The idea for the open-air museum was conceived in 2009 by Roberto Hernández Bravo and David Villarroel Fuentes, who both live in San Miguel. Together with other local residents, they founded the Mixart Cultural Center to promote art in public spaces. The first mural was created in 2010, inspired by the open-air museum in Valparaíso. The project was supported by the National Art Fund and has continued to develop ever since.

The murals

The first mural was dedicated to the Chilean music group Los Prisioneros, whose members are from the region. Over the years, more and more works have been added, addressing themes such as social justice, music, culture and the history of San Miguel. The artworks are not just decoration, but contribute to the positive transformation of the neighborhood and turn it into a living open-air museum.

The murals are closely linked to the history of the neighborhood, which was originally built in the 1960s as a workers’ housing estate. For a long time, the public space was characterized by neglect. Today, thanks to the artworks and the involvement of local residents, the area has been transformed into a lively, creative center.
